A walk in the enchanted Castle of Sifnos
Village and castle together on the island of Sifnos, reminisce the glorious past, the traditional village of Kastro lives and breathes today, thanks to the tenacity and the willingness of people to root on this steep rock that “flirts” for centuries with the stormy Aegean Sea... Walking through the narrow cobblestone streets, with the fresh painted homes and the small courtyards, decorated with geraniums and bougainvilleas, one observes the
perfect space utilization. The houses of the outer side were form a wall and the entrance or the exit was done only through five porticoes or “lodzies”.
In bygone days, Kastro (castle) was the old capital of the island until 1836, and owes its name to its build shape, as a medieval fortress. Its current architecture presence preserves almost intact its medieval character (14th c.), then, due to the fear of pirates, people built the cities-fortresses. Two and three storey houses, tightly hugged, Venetian mansions with inscriptions and coats of arms, old furniture and objects of the Venetian era, testify to its medieval past. Colored wooden balconies beautify the second row houses. Here were coming in the past the lords to enjoy the sun that was setting behind the mountain of Prophet Elias.
Among the streets, we will discover the interesting Archaeological Museum, the churches of Virgin Eleousa (metropolis, 1635), Theoskepasti (1631), Taxiarchis, Saint John the Theologian (1812), St Nikolaos (1536), Assumption of Virgin (1593), St. Catherine (1665)...
Coming out of the rear exit, the gaze travels to the Aegean Sea. Below us, the small picturesque church of Eftamartiros, nailed to bare rock, looks like a painting. Outside the castle are the churches of St. John the Baptist and St. Stephen.
Idea for hiking! One of the most beautiful trails is the one that leads, after a walk of about 20 minutes, to the Lady Poulati with the picturesque harbor. We can, of course, approach it by car from Artemonas.
In Sifnos, we will light a candle in Virgin Mary of Chrysopigi church with the miraculous image. Then, we will swim in the beautiful beach and we will enjoy great food at the taverns next to the sea. Great is the beach of Platis Gialos with its vast sandy beach and the turquoise waters. Vathy and Faros are also good seas with taverns by the sea. In the afternoon, we will prefer a stroll through the narrow streets of Artemonas and we will enjoy the traditional flavors of the island.
