The formidable castle of Palamidi

The formidable castle of Palamidi with the intense messianic atmosphere, circling the city of Nauplio. The steep hill, that gave its name to the castle, fortified by the Enetians when Franzesko Morozini attached the city from the Turks (1686).

The fortification as it is today belongs to the second period of venetian dominance.

The construction was taken over by the french La Sal for Enetian
account, that in a while he betrayed them, by making disabled their canons for
the Turks sake.

At the top of the hill, in 216 meters height and above the tracks of the
prehistorical fortress, the wrecks of seven fortresses, six of them have the
names of ancient warriors: Themistocles, Miltiades, Achilleas, Fokion,
Epameinondas, Leonidas.

The visitor ascending the castle on foot, with the 857 grubbed in the hill
steeply steps that leads to Palamidi. From there, he discovers the extraordinary
sea frame that surrounds Nauplio, passing through the continuous gates.

Archaeological sites, museums, monuments

On the top of the fortress the historic church of Agios Andreas maintains here and is from the Enetian era."The lion of Agios Markos", is found in many spots of the fortress.

Here the cells that used to be prison cells are also
maintaining. In one of these cells Theodoros Kolokotronis was kept.
Palamidi was an unconquerable fortress, and for this reason his takeover at 1822
by the Greeks with commander Staiko Staikopoulo after a long siege, was considered of highly importance.

Access to the castle

Today the access to the fortress is possible either through the motorway that ends at the east side or though the famous ladder that is located at the west side.
This ladder, that tradition has it that consists of 999 steps, because the 1000th step was dropped by the horse of Kolokotronis, in reality has less steps and was built in Othonas period of time by convicts that were prisoners in Palamidi, under the oversight of the babaric army. From here we enjoy the magnificent view towards the castle of Akronauplia.

By car:

Access to Nauplio is easy by car through the existing road network. The time that you need to get there from Athens is 90 - 120 min by car.

The train stop is located at the port. Connects Nauplio with Korinthos and Pireus.
The route for Korinthos is approximately 1h and 15 minutes.
