Temple of Panagia Ambelakiotisa in Naupaktia
Following north from Naupaktos, the road for mountainous Naupaktia area at Ambelakiotisa village, we will meet the famous monastery.
Built in 1847, though the older temple was from 1456. The front side of the monastery is impressive and has a sign that informs about the dates of foundation and renovation. The temple of 1871 was constructed in a local wood-scruple workshop...
Inside temple there are some significant holy relics which give honour and prestige at Monastery and fairly considered to be the " Ark of Naupaktia", as it keeps priceless relics.
It was founded in 1455, when as tradition says a shepherd from the village found an icon of Theotokos under a tree that still exists until today. It is said that this icon came from the village Ambelakia of Thessalia that it was looted by the Ottomans after the Fall of Constantinopole. This icon was thrown at Pineios by the Turks when they overcome the village.
In miraculous way, the icon was found in a tree that stands behind the monastery, at 15th of August 1455. Then it built the first monastery, and after twenty years (1475) during a fundraise the right hand of Agios Polykarpos Episkope of Smirni was received.
During the years of revolution the monastery was a lair of generals of the army and shelter for women and children after the fall of Messolonghi.
The icon of Panagia of 17th century, propably based on a model of 1456. The silver cover is of 1820.
At the temple there is a place that keeps the hand of Agios Polykarpos, and also the silver bonecase of 1470 with Saint bones, a gift from Patriarchis Timotheos to the Abbot of the monastery.
From Constantinopole comes the extravagant epitaph made of gold (1735) by the famous Margiora from Chalki with influences from Palaiologian art.
