The city of Chios is build in the borders of the ancient city.
A wide rage of archaeological foundings testifies the existence of an important Ionic city with a great port, theater and temples that continues to live until the end of latest antiquity.
From the moment of foundation until our days, the city of Chios, is the economical, cultural center of the island.
The famous Aplotaria is the central road of the island until today, is confirmed from 16th century. Chios this period is descriptioned as a rich city with an intense trade movement and special architecture. Turcocracy follows and continues with the same , with a tragic ending the slaughter of 1822 and the earthquake of 1881. Chios is completely ruined, leaving behind some evidents that reminds of the city that made great impression to the visitors.
In the recently renewed Archaeological museum, next to it is the university, marvelous archaeological foundings are exposed, scruptures, jewelleries etc.
Many extraordinary samples of art,ceramic,and daily culture from all the periods are saving, from the ancient times and Roman period.
In the old mosque the Byzantine museum is hosted with interesting exposures from Byzantine, Genoveze and Ottoman period.
Close to the castle gate we find the museum Ioustiani with Byzantine images and wood sculptures.
A little bit higher from Aplotaria, we find the navy museum of Chios, a new and modern museum, where someone can admire the amazing history of Chios navy.
Objects of rare interest testifies the magnitude of an era that continues to exist in some point.
In the same place with Korah liblary, that consists of a great variety of rare books, we find also the Folklore museum of Argenti with the extravagant collection of folklore objects that rebuilt the islands life the last 500 years.
