The beautiful and romantic Nafplio

The Old Town charms, the view is impressive and its sights will "steal" your attention. Nafplio, in 1828, was the first capital of Greece, at Kapodistria's era, and from then holds respect for the valuable traditional elements that year by year are kept and maintained with great success. A walk in the Old City will convince you and give you the chance to explore its beauty. The views of Argolis Gulf and of the mountains of eastern Peloponnese will not leave you untouched.
The hallmark of the city, Bourtzi, stands opposite, built in the island of Sts. Theodore and gives a romantic touch to the whole scene.
Bourtzi was built in 1473 by the Italian engineer Gabello and its name in Tourkish-Arabian language means island - fortress.
It is an island located in front of the port of Nafplio, with its picturesque old Venetian fortress.
It is located about 300 meters opposite the port. At 1930's was turned into a centre of the Tourism Organization and in the period of 1960-70 was operated as a hotel. Today, during the summer, a number of interesting events take place there, musical and cultural.

At Palamidi, you will see the magnificent castle, a true masterpiece that adorns the town of Nafplio. Designed by Grimani and built in 1714 in the second period of the Venetian rule.
The town of Nafplio is linked to it via a gallery and later the stairs were built that exist until today. Deeply scarred historically, still overshadowed by the imprisonment of Theodoros Kolokotronis who sentenced to death in one of its cells.
The atmosphere will cause a shiver and the images will take you back to that era. It is situated at an altitude of 200 meters southeast of Acronafplia and is of a unique infrastructure Castle-complex.
Vrachos of Acronafplia is considered to be the Acropolis of Nafplion and from there, climbing the many steps, you can enjoy the fantastic views of the Old Gate, the Bay of Nafplion, the Argolid plain, and of course the magnificent Bourtzi.
Taking a walk in the streets, pass by the church of St. Spyridon, a classy old building of 1702 that became a historic place after the assassination of the first Greek commander, Kapodistrias, on September 27, 1831. Visit the Archaeological Museum, where you will see artefacts of the Mycenaean period, the building of the Army Academy that hosts the Army Museum with numerous exhibits that excite the interest and the imposing Syntagma Square with the two Turkish mosques, one of which was used for meetings of the first Greek parliament.
Nafplio is rightly one of the most beautiful cities in Greece with the magnificent architecture of the 19th century that decorate the settlements, its cobblestone streets and its rich history. After a long tour, you can take a lunch break at a restaurant or a tavern. The city has dozens of those, traditional, simple but also luxurious, where you can taste whatever food you like.

Access
By car:
Access to Nafplio town is easy by car through the existing road network. The time that you need to get there from Athens is 90 - 120 min by car.
The best way to explore, wander around Argolida and discover its nature and archaeological sights is to have your own vehicle.
It is worth visiting places where local tranportation and organized tours do not reach.
