The Museum of Byzantine Culture is housed in a building on the Avenue Stratoy 2 made by the architect Kyriakos Krokos . The jurisdiction of the Museum owns the monument of the White Tower .
This building was founded in 1989 and inaugurated in September 1994 .
The museum is a scientific edifice, open to the public, with a wider , cultural and educational nature, aims to collect, preserve , protection, conservation, exhibition, appointment, promotion and study of works and objects of early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine period, mostly from the geographical area of Macedonia as well as the excavation material of 9 Committee of Byzantine Antiquities, which works directly.
The museum collections include sculptures , mosaics, frescoes , icons coins , inscriptions, pottery , manuscripts , miniature objects and glass .
This material comes from excavations in Thessaloniki and other regions of Macedonia , from purchases , donations and antiques traditions and returning antiques of Macedonia , which had been transferred in 1916 , after the liberation of Thessaloniki , in the Byzantine and Christian Museum, which kept until the 1990s .
The museum donated two large private collections of Dori Papastratou , consisting of Orthodox religious engravings , and Demetrius Oikonomopoulos which comprises mainly icons and ceramics , coins and miniature works .
Today, the museum collections still constantly enriched with objects markets, conducted by the Ministry of Culture or by private donations and foundations.
The museum is housed in one of the most important buildings of modern public architecture in Greece, architect Kyriakos Krokos, whereas in this subject and monument of Thessaloniki, the White Tower.

The permanent exhibition is developed in eleven halls , corresponding to an equal number of separate exhibition sections . All different aspects and periods of Byzantine culture and are organized according to modern museological perceptions , so every subject not treated as an independent work of art , but integrated into a collection of objects illustrating aspects of the society that created it .
The first 3 rooms are dedicated to the early Christian period ( 4th-7th c.) .The next three in middle Byzantine (8th to 12th), the seventh in the Late Byzantine (13th-1453), the 8th and the 9th in Papastratou collections and Oikonomopoulos respectively, the 10th in the post-Byzantine period (1453-19th c.) And the 11th in the process the discovery of an ancient object to the exposure of the museum.
The Museum of Byzantine Culture, in the framework of realization of the aims of, the general public, encourage through appropriate activities to increase the turnout of visitors at the Museum, is conducive to entertaining and educational contact together with his collections and guarantees a scientifically proven and internationally scholarly museological their presentation.
The Museum of Byzantine Culture is responsible for:
- The organization and the public of the permanent exhibition of the collections.
- Organizing periodic reports independently or in co-organization with the Territory Museums and Antiquities , and with valid foreign museums or institutions that ensure a high level presentation of items in safe conditions , upon recommendation of the Central Archaeological Council .
- Organization of training and information programs for school and other groups, scientific and cultural high-level events, either independently or in cooperation with prestigious cultural and educational institutions in Greece and abroad, for the presentation, acquaintance and promotion of Byzantine culture.
- The classification of archaeological material in the museum object category or source (eg collecting donation).
- Storage and maintenance of the collections according to modern museological standards.
- Archiving and documentation of collections with science-based and internationally esteemed museological manner.
- The research and publication of studies, books and such related collections or publishing reports
- The journal Bulletin of the Museum addressed the international scientific community.
- The enrichment of the museum collections with excavation material or the purchase of new works and objects and any other legal way.
- In continuous enrichment of the library of the museum and its interface with the international electronic networks.
- Organizing the documentation center with expert scientists and high-tech equipment.
