Melissa Gorge is located in the area of the former Sfakiotes Municipality and extends two kilometers away, just outside and north of Kavalos village up to the first village we come across from the city of Lefkada, Apolpena.
The flora consists of plane trees, olive trees, ferns, pines, cypresses, laurels, oaks, arbutus, wild roses, myrtles, willow, osier, sedges and other wild vegetation in general, while here have found refuge and live falcons, cuckoos, ferrets, foxes, birds, woodcocks, badgers, weasels, porcupines, woodpigeons, partridges, bee-eaters, grouse, magpies, oriole, vipers, etc.
You can go through the marked, well maintained and cared path, length of about two kilometers, which starts from the entrance of the gorge, at an altitude of 320m and ends at the end of Kako Lagkadi, at an altitude of 150 m. To cross it, you will need about 1 hour of feasible route, and if you like, you can wander through the few ramifications that reach to very beautiful sites, such as the large plateau with the watermills of "Kospeto" and through wonderful paths with mills, wooden and stone bridges.
At the beginning of the gorge, you will see "Spilia” (Cave), which is "digged" in a rock and you will quench your thirst from the source with the splendid water. The gorge is crossed by an impetuous torrent, the waters of which were used to give power to the watermills in the area, buildings with an arch and mantras. The watermills have an opening as door and one - maximum two- windows, with a sloping tiled roof.
If you love the walks in nature, it is worth visiting it and, even better, exploring it. The small fatigue will surely be compensated by the unique nature and the special environment.
