The beautiful Gaios Paxos, Gais
The capital and main port of the island is a beautiful village with a strong presence of green. The last years, it has been showing significant tourism development and has plenty of accommodation, hotels, rooms and apartments.
There are also several restaurants and entertainment shops, and most of them are located in the Venetian piazza.
A walk around the harbor will remain memorable, with the anchored vessels to form a very impressive sight, as well as the beautiful buildings with the strong presence of British and Venetian influences, as Paxos was mainly influenced by them in the past.
For your swimming, one of the most "easy" and better choices is the beach located on Moggonisi Island, to which you can go by boat from the port or by your own vessel. Of course, there are many other beaches within a walking distance from Gaios, as Gianna, Soulalena and the beaches at the opposite islands of Panagia and St. Nicholas.
One of the sights of Gaios is the church of the Holy Apostles with the murals. Inside, there are characteristic quirks of Ionian architecture.
Visit the island of Panagia that hosts a monastery devoted to Virgin Mary, which, during the mid-August festival, attracts many pilgrims from the surrounding areas and there takes place the procession of the icon of Dormition.
From Gaios begins the only island’s road that leads to the other four small settlements. On one side it leads towards Ozia within 2 km, and on the other towards Loggos, Lakka and Magazia, about 8 km away.
For your stay in Paxos, you can book a room in one of the hotels and Bed & Breakfast inns.
In Gaios, as well as in many other areas of the island, there are hotels and accommodations of various categories and types (rooms to let, residences, Bed & Breakfast inns, studios, hostels, guesthouses and furnished apartments) that can satisfy every visitor's demands and needs for a pleasant and enjoyable stay.
You will find wonderful hotels, rooms and apartments to let of all categories and price ranges.
You can access Paxos by car through Igoumenitsa.
The best way to explore the area is to have your own car and is worth visiting places that are not accesible by the local public transport and tours.
The distances on the island are short and can be covered by public means of transport.
Daily ferry routes are scheduled from and towards Igoumenitsa to Paxos (Gaios) and Corfu via Igoumenitsa.
