Feast of Nerantzitia – Koulouma in Itea

Itea... Itia for the older people,
Itia with the blue color to spread along its legs, the Corinthian gulf !

A multicultural city that hides in its "heart” its history, of many years - certainly 200 years back - folkways, diverse habits, because many have passed from here, coming from various parts of Greece and abroad and the most of them stayed there.

Everybody fell in love with Itia, because it gave them the “opening” of the soul and mind to the endless blue, filled them with the strong smell of the blooming gardens and the orchards, which multiplied by the scent of the bitter orange flowers this aroma is calming you, you feel jolly, happy, well-being! Years ago, people planted those, filling with colors the streets... green foliage and orange fruits... resistant to cold, to severe weather conditions. Bitter orange among lemon and orange trees. The storied Bitter orange.

Mardi Gras
When we were kids, we were dressed masquerades every night of Mardi Gras we were making groups, knocking the doors to open in order to start teasing and to recognize us, and we didn’t leave the house without treating, we waited... what else? To treat us sweet bitter orange! There was no home without homemade sweet bitter orange! And sometimes we began the Bitterorange-war – this custom is continued nowadays.... this is youth... schoolboys!
There was no neighborhood and crossroad without a Fire. Another competition for the neighborhoods and teams for the biggest fire - we had not leave any fence, anywhere we found wood, we “grab it” and if we had any wheel - we were the best! The deeper we get at Halloween and as the fasting was approaching, the cookers were prepared for another taste... the “Kolochalvas”, and if the landlady had roasted almonds.... Wow....! We must not forget and the sprinkling with cinnamon to feel the “warmth”, the sweetness and the reverie it has.

Scents of warmth...
Smells of family, love, hospitality. Who could forget those? Certainly none, they are inside our mind, our body and, in 2011, we relived them, and thus the Feast of NerantzItia was reborn and so we cooked again in the large pots now... Kolochalvas, but in meters... we continue for the record of “Kolochalvas"! Some people believed in this, they searched and finally they implemented it! Volunteers from KAPI of the Municipal Unity of Itea grate and cook the bitter orange, the chefs with their assistants prepare Kolochalvas at the pier of Itea and then the serving begins...

Bitter Orange tree blooming, loaded with bitter oranges...
Do not forget the "Great Game”, in which the children from the schools of our Primary Unity are taking part • the organizers do their best! The peak is the prizes to the excelled teams, who also perform dances.

Come to Itea, we invite you to walk along the beach, to treat you sweet bitter orange and “kolochalvas” and many other dishes • to drink wine around the large fire at Molos and then go to the Bar - Cafes and to taverns, to eat anything you want • you will surely dance with the locals, the treat is sure thing... hospitality is in our heart!
