Easter in Athens
The center of Athens hides beauties that most us are not aware of them. So, lets be the "travelers" in our city... Plan with your friends a walk with cultural interest and be proud living in this country. Begin with a walk from Keramikos and continue to Ancient market and Ifestos temple. Walk through the Roman market from Aerides bath and start to ascend towards to Acropolis. At atmospheric streets of Plaka and Anafiotika time counts differently...You think that you leave in different periods of time...
You can also follow the street that starts from Thisseio train station and walk until Philopapou, on your way you can stop in one of the cafeterias and enjoy a coffee with the extraordinary view of the Parthenon!
Truly, when was your last time that you ascend the Acropolis? Supposingly from school years.. You know that thousands of tourists from every part of the world come every year in Greece to visit the holy hill of Acropolis and the Parthenon. Maybe one of these days is the chance for us to make a visit?
Undoubtely, to organise fully our cultural walk, we will visit the magnificent museum of Acropolis. We will rest for a while at the cafe restaurant of the museum and we will continue our walk at the gates of Olympic Zeus and from there to Zapeion and National Garden to relax and feel the spring in all its majesty.
Another great proposal, in a different direction, is to ascend Lycabettus, to enjoy Athens from above... At western suburbs, you will enjoy a stroll at Antonis Tritsis environmental concern park in Ilion.
For shortly furthest getaways of the city that will bring you near nature and beauties of Attica, you can schedule a daily trip to Sounio (to see Poseidon temple), but also to Parnitha (at Bafi shelter or Beletsi lake) , to breath fresh air and enjoy the spring nature.
Lastly, another nice proposal for a daily getaway is Schinias in Marathonas, pic nic in the woods , bird watching in the National Park of Schinia and walks next to the waves...
Which Epitaph will you follow in Athens?
At Great Friday you can follow one of the churches epitaphs of the center and Plaka ( Mitropoli, Agia Irini, Agia Aikaterini, Agios Georgios Karitsis and Plaka Metamorphosis), that meet around 21.30 p.m. at Syntagma.
You will experience a particularly meditative atmosphere on Holy Friday in Plaka, in Metoxi , the well known temple of Agioi Anargiroi, under the candles light (on the Great Saturday the Holy Light comes here firstly from Jerusalem and afterwards is tranfered to all the churches of the country)
Also a good suggestion for Epitaph is the ancient church of Kapnikarea, in the beginning of Ermou street.
The Epitaph, around 12.00 p.m. , inside nature, you will follow Kaisarianis monastery.
You will experience moments of pray and mediation at Pentelis monastery, that follows a specific ritual these days. At the back side of the monastery, in a particular point which called "Golgothas" there are three crosses where takes place the representation of Jesus Christ crucifixion. Holy Friday afternoon, from 13.00 - 13.30, Apokathilosis takes place, and in the evening, the Epitaph goes out from the central door and comes back from the side of the church.
At "Golgotha" the resurrection happens in Holy Saturday evening. On Sunday evening, "loves day" , Euaggelion is reading in all languages of the world.
Another good idea to see the Epitaph in Athens is at Pedion Areos, where the Epitaph procession is made inside the park full of trees.
