Easter in Hydra

Good Friday... with maritime Epitaph!
Picturesque, traditional and seductress, Hydra knows how to win hearts! Flooded by all sorts of wildflowers, this time of year, it welcomes us in a different atmosphere... Courtyards, homes and yard walls are painted in white and the neighborhoods smell of freshly baked Easter cookies. In this island, Easter is celebrated with "maritime Epitaph" and a spectacular Resurrection. It is worth experiencing it!

The days of Easter in this island are revived unique manners and customs tied to the sea. From a tranquil island in the winter, it is transformed into a cosmopolitan one, since many are now the fans who come here to experience and participate in this different Easter.

In the evening of Good Friday, the procession of the Epitaph through the narrow streets and at the beach is an unforgettable experience. But the special during this night is the "Maritime Epitaph”, of the parish of St. John, which wanders in the neighborhoods of Kamini district, followed by crowds of worshipers with candles, to end up in the water at the picturesque harbor, with the young children to keep it firmly on their shoulders.
It is an old custom that is preserved till our days for blessing the waters. As the Epitaph is in the water, a prayer is sung for the sponge divers and the sailors of the island. In the evening, in the taverns and the ouzo-bars at the harbor we will enjoy fresh seafood and snacks to accompany our ouzo.

In the evening of Holy Saturday, we will witness the Resurrection liturgy in the Cathedral of the Assumption at the harbor. Once the priest says "Christ is Risen", the sky is filled with thousands of colored fireworks, while the illuminated ships start their sirens and light up the sky with red flares!

On the afternoon of Easter Sunday, on the waterfront of the port, we have the burning of Judas. This is a dummy filled with flammable materials which is ignited in a spectacular manner, giving its own color to the port. It is time, however, for a coffee and yummy marzipan (traditional sweets of the island, known as "Hydraika").
