Spring is the best time to get to know Chios. If we want to discover Chios, we should have in our disposal several days. But for sure this trip will be an unforgettable experience. In the city of Chios will visit Korais library, the archaeological museum and Venetian castle. Its beauty, will not end here. The road network is very good and helps us in our movements. Easily we can move to parts of the island that are of particular interest.
We visit Armolia and go to the Leaning Tower, with its houses painted with the technique of scratch. The walks along the narrow cobbled streers, the arches are undoubtedly an experience. The square will rest for a while, sipping a Greek coffee or ouzo with apperitezers. Then, we will continue to Mesta, the best preserved medieval village of Chios, but the picturesque Olympus, with its romantic atmospere.
At the west side of the island, 11 km away from the port, is nestled in a wooden valley one of the most important monasteries of the north Aegean: Nea Moni!
Founded in 1042 by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomarchos, where they found the miraculous icon of Panagia.
Certainly we will ascend at the historian Anavatos (the "Mystras of Chios"), where fled to save themselves from the Turks in 1822, the inhabitants of Chios and died a tragic end.
Then we will make a stop in the picturesque Avgonyma and will continue at Volissos and Agia Markella.
