Aegina, a stone's throw from Athens and with continuous links to the port of Piraeus, with its healthy climate and natural beauty is, undoubtedly, a tourist island, which offers visitors the ideal place for rest, leisure and spiritual regeneration. We will make a stop for ouzo and seafood at the taverns in order to refill power to help us continue the strolls at the traditional streets of the city with the unique old classical houses that makes us feel like we are living in another era...

Between them we will meet the enetial tower of Markelos that stands here for centuries and from now on host cultural events at its grounds.
Near Markelos tower we find the Kivernio with the extraordinary two-floor building that was the house of Kapodistria and the first Coin-museum of the country. Near to it we will find the church of Agios Nikolaos with the impressive . From the most important churches of the island is Panagitsa, at edge of the port and the metropole of Aegina that is dedicated to Koimisi of Theotokou, to Agios Ioannis Theologos and Agios Dionisios almost near the building of the public Theater of the island.

A litlle bit further from Aegina, at Livadi, we will visit the house of Kazantzakis, where he wrote " Alexis Zormbas" that host many art personalities such as Aggelos Sikelianos. Special intrerest presents the rich Psaragora of Aegina, and also the grosseries on the sea that are open all day long.

At pathwalks of yesterday...
In old times here in Aegina we will find a very important navy and trade power. Based on mythology, Aegina was one of the fifty daughter of God Asopos and beloved of Zeus that kidnapped her and brought her at Inoni island that took her name. There they gave birth to a son, Eakos, that Zeus made him the king of the island . Though in order to have more residents on the island, he transformed the ants of the island to humans. As a result, the residents of Aegina named Mirmidones.


The island is habilitated from the 4th century b.c and came to his growth from 8th to 5th b.c , when was participated with other cities at Amfiktionia of Kalavria. Her strategic position and trade activities made her a powerful naval and trade power that succed to dominate at East Mediterenean Sea.

Here it was cut the first greek and european coin, the "turtle" at 650 b.c.  Aiginitio manufacture (famous of 6th- 5th b.c) founded at the island the Belle Arts and sculpture center. Important was also her participation with powerful navy at the historical battle of Salamina at 480 b.c. against Perses.
Afterwards very difficult years came...under the control of Athenians. Another important contribution was at the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Turks.

After winning the war at 1828, Ioannis Kapodistrias was made Aegina the base of the government of Greece. At this era at Aegina was surrounded all the profounded people of social, political, economical, and trade scene. You can feel all this strength  when you walk at the graphic streets with the impressive neo-classic homes most of them are rebuilt..

Access
Access to Aegina is possible by ferry from the port of Piraeus. Local transportation is very good so transportation by car is unnecessary. There are regular bus routes for the most areas of the island by the local bus.

Daily ferry departures from the port of Piraeus to Aegina, arrival after 1 hour and 15 minutes. Pireaus - Souvala trip duration is 1 hour.
From the port of Piraeus, in front of the church of Agios Spiridonas, dophins leave every day. Trip duration to Aegina is 35 minutes and to Agia Marina 1 hour.
