Syros island has all the charms in Cyclades
With timeless charm and noble origin, this island has all the charms! From the beautiful Ermoupoli to picturesque Ano Syra, the unique Delagratsia and the beaches in Galissa, Finikas and Kini… Syros will make you fall in love with it without even realizing!
Once the ship reaches the port of Syros, you strongly feel the longing to experience the island’s special charm. A place with a rich cultural heritage and a centuries-old tradition unfolds slowly, lazily around you, ‘challenging’ you to discover it... Walking the streets of Syros, you initially arrive at the grandiose Miaoulis Square with the impressive Town Hall, Chiller’s masterpiece, built in the 19th century. Right next to it is the Municipal Library with the busts of prominent Syrians (like Roides, Vikelas etc.) in front of it.
Moving up a little, we find the Apollo Theater, built in 1864. Its spaces today host interesting cultural events. Nearby is the first public high school of modern Greece, where Eleftherios Venizelos studied. A little further, we will see the church of St. Nicholas (1849), with its blue domes.
The neoclassical building of the Prefecture is located at Tsiropina square. From here Apollo Street starts, in the Vaporia district, Syros’ most prestigious corner. Many stately mansions are built on the rocks that directly "converse" with the sea. The view from their balconies is enchanting! Some of them have been turned into welcoming guesthouses. Following the road with the many steps behind the City Hall, we will discover the upper neighborhoods of Syros. At the top of Dili Hill the imposing Church of the Resurrection dominates its surroundings.
In traditional Ano Syra...
One of the most beautiful places on the island is undoubtedly Ano Syra or Upper Town. Built by Venetians, it retains up to today its medieval physiognomy. In the traditional settlement, which we enter through the characteristic Gate, we will get lost in the labyrinthine streets with the many steps, the whitewashed houses, and the taverns with their panoramic view of the harbor and Ermoupoli. On the top, the church of Saint George, the Catholic diocese, dominates the area.
It is worth discovering the Capuchin Monastery and the Monastery of Jesuits. In Ano Syra, Markos Vamvakaris was born and raised, the founder of rebetiko music, who praised his hometown with “Fragkosyriani”. A stop at the Vamvakaris Museum, next to the square with his bust is essential. Markos Vamvakaris played his music at the legendary "Ypoga" at Lilis.
Traditional cheese "San Michalis" San Michalis is a traditional Greek cheese that has been produced on the island of Syros for several decades. It is one of the most expensive cheeses in the country (The retail price of this cheese is around 22.5 to 23 euros per kilo), and has been recognized since 1996 in Europe as a product with protected designation of origin. It is made exclusively from cow's milk in the island of Syros. It has been produced with traditional technology for the last 60 years on the island and is highly appreciated by consumers. The name of the cheese comes from a mountain in the north of the island where the village of St. Michael is located. A total of 46 tons of cheese are produced each year. It has a cylindrical shape and hard texture, a maximum humidity of 40% by weight and a fat content of 36% dry. Its flavor is salty and spicy. It is eaten as is with bread or fruit, and is also used in many culinary recipes. |
Early in the 19th century, Ano Syra was the island’s main settlement with many residents, mostly Catholics. In 1821, Syros, due to favorable treatment (because of the protection of the French), will become a haven for thousands of refugees from Chios, Kasos, Psara, Smyrni, Crete etc.
The refugee sailors and merchants built the new city with its large natural harbor that became the first port in Greece, giving wealth to Syros. So, in honor of Ermis Kerdoos, the town is named Ermoupoli, knowing days of glory, with its textile industries, famous shipyards and shipping companies. For the building of the mansions great architects from Greece and abroad were conscripted.
Tastes from Syros...
On the island we will enjoy the famous traditional "San Michalis" cheese (hard, pale yellow cheese), the "San Tzortzis” aromatic cheese, excellent “Kopanisti” and the small "Petrota” cheeses.
Also famous are the Garlic-sausages of Syros. We will enjoy, of course, a great variety of turkish delights and chalvadopites, as well as the exceptional thyme honey.
In taverns and in the island’s ouzo-bars (usually small in space) we will try delicious flavors influenced by the Cyclades, such as octopus with sundried tomato, “strapatsada”, “atherinopita”, braised chicken with capers, fennel-pie, fish with dry capers and many more…
