Near the abandoned village of Liveron at the south part of Rodopi mountain line, where paths are created between the mountainous hills, lies Nestos route, a route with extensive and long-distance meanders, forming an extraordinary area of enchanting beauty with rare and lush vegetation, an area of 24.000 sq. meters which justifiably, since 1977, has been characterized as an “Aesthetic Forest”.

Alongside the river the railway line Thessaloniki-Alexandroupoli is set. For the needs of the railway, during the period of its construction, a path was created at a higher altitude. The path, elaborately carved on the rocks at some of its parts, was used by the railway workers for their transports during the construction but today is a well known sight, valued for its exceptional architecture and its breathtaking view.
In addition, towards the end of 19th century and during the Ottoman Empire, French technicians built thirty tunnels essential for the passage of the train from Thessaloniki to Istanbul (Konstantinoupolis), the famous ORIENT EXPRESS

The visit to the well known path, even in a small part of it close to the village Toxotes, is the perfect chance for any visitor to admire the originally captivating landscape.

If you are fond of hiking, you could follow the path in combination with the route formed by the railway lines. You could use as starting point the village Galani located 10 kilometers from Xanthi and walk towards Kromnikou spring (5,5 kilometers) continue towards the Liveron station (3 kilometers) and finally up to Stavroupoli (10 kilometres). The route is worth every second and try, leaving you – without doubt – with a fulfilling experience.

No matter of the season you choose for visisting, the genuine beauty will pleasantly surprise you. You will meet springs and specially designed recreation areas with benches, tables and shelters to rest. You will stroll next to the sandy banks of the river, to steep cliffs, to sophisticatedly paths curved on the rocks, or in parallel with the train lines gazing delightful images of the virgin scenery.

You will be surrounded by a torrent of lush greenery, sycamores, wild olives, willows, alders, cedars and oaks and a variety of wild flowers, violets and orchids. Meanwhile, if you are lucky, rare birds such as herons, vultures and eagles will accompany you.

By airplane:
One of the airports close to Xanthi is "Megas Alexandros" (Alexander the Great) airport in Chrisoupoli in Kavala at distance of 40 km.
Another airpost is the "Dimokritos" in Alexandroupolis, 115 km far from Xanthi and the access is easy and quick through Egnatia highway.
