Vathi is the capital of Ithaca and the main port also, from the 16th century. The village is built in a bay cove, surrounded by green" mountains.
Cave of Nymphs
When the ship comes to the port the first thing that you can see is the traditional one-storey or two-storey houses and the small island Lazaretto at the entrance of the island, which is distinguished for the germination. At the top of the hill -above Vathi- dominates the castle which built in 1807.
In Vathi and near the bay is the cave of Nymphs. The main characteristic of the cave is the colourful stalagmites. According the tradition, this is the cave where Odysseus hid the gifts of the Feakes, when he came back to the island.
