Venetian Museum in Naxos island

The tower of Della Rocca-Barozzi is at the northern entrance of the Castle of Naxos, the so-called "Trani Pyli" (Great Gate), on the right as we enter. Built in the early of 13th century by the Venetians, rulers of Naxos and Cyclades islands and repaired in 1694 by the Crusader Sforza Castri, as it is written on an inscription in the Main Room of the Tower.

The walls of the Tower (6 m in width and 1.65 m on the top) are stone made. The most used materials are boulders of marble and granite, derived mainly from the ruins of ancient Greek and Byzantine buildings.
The Tower consists of the main floor (living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen, library, chapel) and underground has four levels.

The inhabitants of this tower are straight descendants of noble families of Della Rocca - Barozzi.

The tower is well preserved and belongs to Karavia family, which strive to maintain unchanged the glory and the brilliance of the building. Today has turned into a wonderful folklore museum which includes furniture and objects that constituted the household of the house.Barozzi family is a noble Venetian family, which has played an important role in various periods of the history of the Republic of Venice. They came to Greece during the Fourth Crusade and conquered the island of Santorini and the surrounding islands. Later, they were the rulers of Heraklion. They came in Naxos, after the conquest of Crete by the Turks, in the 16th century.

History of Della Rocca or Della Roche family by James Joseph De Grimaldi, historian of Naxos and Athens.

The family is of French origin, emanating from the Counts of Burgundy (Comtes de Bourgogne). They were dominating the Duchy of Athens (1203 - 1307) with first Duke Otto (Othone). Later, the name took an Italian form and became Della Rocca because of the influence of the Venetians in Naxos and the presence of the Republic of Venice, with first representative Marco Sanudo, who founded the Duchy of Archipelago of Cyclades.
