Syros .. The capital of Cyclades islands
In Syros, the capital of the Cyclades, the "East” interacts harmoniously with the “West”, resulting in a unique atmosphere, aristocratic and cosmopolitan.
The island's capital, Ermoupoli, was the first commercial and industrial center of the country to experience unprecedented growth by Greek standards during the 19th century. As a result, the city is still adorned today with glorious public buildings (Town Hall, Customs, Apollo Theatre), grand squares, neoclassical houses, and an outdoor architectural museum.
Do not forget to visit the Industrial Museum that is housed in three buildings and summarizes the town’s breakneck economic prosperity, known as the "Manchester of Greece."
The religious monuments (Transfiguration of the Saviour, Saint Nicholas the Rich, Assumption), majestic temples that clearly depict the contribution of the Orthodox community to the architecture of Syros, are considered points of reference.
As a counterpoint to the Orthodox presence in the newer Ermoupoli, on the hill of St. George, Ano Syros unfolds, a medieval settlement of the Catholic community in a typical defensive layout of its houses around the (fortified) Cathedral of Saint George. It is worth climbing the countless stairs leading to the top of the hill and wandering through the labyrinthine alleys, the traditional whitewashed houses, the arches over the road and the narrow streets that lead to small neighborhoods. The view from the hill of Ano Syros is amazing.
The island is ideal for water activities, as it has numerous wonderful beaches: Vari,
Finikas, Galissas, Kini and Posidonia (or Delagratsia) with neoclassical mansions and elaborate gardens are just some of the island’s heavenly beaches.
The famous chalvadopites and turkish delights, sausages such as louza and the "maratholoukanika” delight the most demanding palate, while it is worth seeking the excellent spicy cheese “San Michalis”.
The rich cultural tradition of the island continues with artistic events of a global appeal that are held annually in Ermoupoli: the International Music Festival of Cyclades and the Classical Music Festival, the Ermoupolia and the Musical May comprise a range of options that cover every taste, enriching holidays in Syros with memorable experiences.
