Monastery of Xeropotamos of Mount Athos (Agion Oros)
Beautiful and majestic monastery, which stands in a very nice location on the western side of the peninsula just over Daphne within 45 minutes walk. It is the eighth in the hierarchy of Athonite monasteries.
The Monastery of Xeropotamos, at delivery, was founded by the monk Paul Xiropotaminos, who stayed there in the late 10th century.
It is dedicated to the 40 Martyrs (March 9) and has owned several important relics.
One of them that worth seeing is the piece of the True Cross, which is the largest in the world with a width of 16 cm, length 31 and 25 cm thick. There, it is also stored a part of the gifts by the 3 Magicians during their visit to Bethlehemfor the Nativity of the Lord, and some parts of the Crucifixion, like a piece of the crown of thorns, of the sponge and of the cloak.
It also features many shrines, in where are kept relics of sixty-one Saints. Of great interest are also the precious frescoes dating from 1783.
The monastery has a total of 16 chapels. Inside the monastery are 7 and 5 of them are having holy icons. The most famous chapels are those of the Archangels and Sts. Constantine and Helen.
The cemetery of the monastery is dedicated to All Saints.
The manpower of the monastery is about 25 monks.
Outside the monastery, to the east, lie the four cells, of Ascension (formerly Transfiguration), of the Nativity of John the Baptist, of the Assumption and of St. Athanasius and of St. Demetrius in Karyes.
