The Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi - Mount Athos

The Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi is the second in the hierarchy of the Athonite monasteries. It is located in the middle of the north-eastern side of the peninsula.
The church is dedicated to the Annunciation.
It was built in the 10th century and was founded by the monks Nicholas, Athanasius and Antonious, coming from Adrianople.

The paintings are of the so-called Macedonian School, from the beginning of 1312. The frescoes of Catholicon are original, while others were repainted later. The marble floor is of exquisite art.

In Vatopedi Monastery you will find a total of thirty-one chapels, twelve of which are outside the Monastery and the others inside the complex.
In the wards there are nine chapels with the most famous to be this of St. Andreas with the wooden temple, while at the courtyard is the chapel of St. Zoni. This has also a carved gilded iconostasis of 1816 and is considered one of the finest of Athos Mount.
The church is dedicated to the Holy Apostles.
The monastery is known for its miraculous images.

Some of these are: of Mary the Leader, of Paramythia, Pantanassa, of Vimatarissa, Antifonitria, of Elaiovrytissa and Esfagmeni.
