Elafonisos, unique and magical
Elafonisos, is considered as pirates' island, charms and captivates the visitors with its turquoise, crystal clear waters, wonderful and amazing beaches, gorgeous olive cedar and the charm of the landscape.
Elafonisos belongs to the prefecture of Laconia and it is in the south-eastern tip of Peloponnese, has an extent of 19 square kilometers and it is easy to access. East, it is located Neapoli.
This beautiful island is especially known for its unique and very clean beaches. During the 16th and 17th century Elafonisos was the base for pirates and corsairs. Until today Elafonisos is the main passage for the ships to the Eastern Mediterranean.

It is said that the name of Elafonisi at the southwest coast of Crete, is derived by Elafonisos' fishermen who arrived there and they looked the chrysoprasinomple color of the sea. They immediately understood that the beach looked like the color of the Elafonisos' beaches as Simos, Virgin Mary and others.
It is needed to say that Elafonisos was not always island but it was joined with a fine point on the mainland. The separation from the mainland took place after the earthquake dated around the 6th century.
The name Elafonisos (the island of deer), probably came from a rich hunting that existed in the region in antiquity.
Pausanias mentions that the area was sacred to the goddess of the hunt Artemis.
Also as mentioned by Pausanias, the area was not Elafonisos island but peninsula called Onou Gnathos (donkey jaw).
Cultural eventstake place during the weekend of July 6-9 and include the integration of Elafonisos with Greece (with the release of the Ionian Islands) and the celebration of the inauguration of the Church and patron Saint Spyridon Elafonisos.
In the last week of August, some events take place in honor of the fishermen, with intense insularity, organized the association of fishermen.

In order to reach Elafonisos you must follow the Tripoli - Sparti road. Continue the route to Monemvasia after passing by Sparti and turn to the exit Punta - Elafonisos after Molaous.

Moving around in the region of Laconia is easy by Laconia Buses with frequent routes.
In order to reach Elafonisos by bus you first have to follow the route to Neapoli, from where there are few routes to Punta in the morning or you can get a taxi.
There are regular routes from and towards Elafonisos and Punta, which is 700 m far from Elafonisos and the journey takes less than 10 min from 7:00 until 24:00.
During summer season there are frequent routes every 30 min.
