If one ever live Easter in Syros, he will have an unforgettable experience. Here, in the "heart" of the Aegean, the harmonious coexistence of Orthodox and Catholic marks this island, which has all the charms...
It is one of the few corners of the world where two different Christian communities, Catholic and Orthodox, celebrate Easter together with contrition, putting aside any religious differences (and regardless of when the Easter date for Catholics is).

During the Holy Week, the housewives prepare Easter cookies and pastries and their delicious aroma fill the neighborhoods. On Holy Tuesday, the church of St. Nicholas plays the first role, in the district of Vaporia, with its famous choir. In the evening of Holy Thursday, at the Orthodox churches of the city, after finishing the 12 Gospels, the girls undertake to decorate the Epitaph.

On Good Friday, around 9.30-10 o'clock, takes place the procession of Epitaph of the orthodox churches of the Transfiguration (the Cathedral), the Assumption and St. Nicholas, in the picturesque streets of the city...
These three Epitaphs (“Epitafia” as locals call them), meet together in Miaoulis Square, in front of the City Hall, where a common prayer is taking place and the anthems from the Choir of St. Nicholas and the Band of the municipality sound. A spectacular sight! The epitaph of the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration comes earlier, at around 20.30.

If we not follow an Epitaph procession, it is better to take our place at the steps of City Hall, from where we will attend the happenings. Otherwise, if we want peace and devotion, we will ascend to the only Orthodox monastery on the island, the Monastery of Agia Varvara, over Kini. The liturgy starts around 16:00 and the procession of the epitaph around 17.00. The epitaph procession is taking place out of the monastery, at the blooming mountain trails.

A different kind of experience is the procession of the epitaph in Ano Syros, by the two Catholic parishes: the Cathedral of St. George (San Gorges) and Saint Sebastian.
Around 20.00, the ritual begins, and then the procession of the Epitaph on the fresh painted streets of the village. In front of the epitaph, a man is holding the cross with a wreath of flowers and white fabric strips, followed by wooden poles with hanging objects - symbols from arresting to the crucifixion of Christ (the 30 pieces of silver, the sponge, the crown of thorns, the red Tunic).
Then, the image of Virgin Mary (a sad image) follows. As the procession passes by the homes, the residents sprinkle Epitaph with flowers and perfumes, while the choir sings hymns of Good Friday.
After the procession, you will end up with your friends in any of ouzo bars or taverns in Ano Syros for seafood and appetizers.

Access
The access to Syros is done via Rafina and Piraeus Ports. From Piraeus to Syros, ships depart daily and the journey time is 3.5 to 4 hours by ferry.
From the port of Rafina, there is regular schedule and the trip takes about 3.5 hours.
The island is connected by boat with the rest of the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Heraklion of Crete and Thessaloniki.

Fast ships connect Syros with the rest of the Cyclades and the ports of Piraeus and Rafina, significantly reducing the duration of the trip.

The urban buses are quite convenient as they connect the center of the island with the most of the villages. In summer, there are more route schedules.

By plane:
Flights are made several times a week from El. Venizelos Airport and the flight time is only 25 minutes. Syros Airport is 4.5 km away from Ermoupoli.
