Bourgi, the sleepless guard of Nauplio

It is a small fortress, at the entrance of the port, just 450 meters from Nauplio city. It was linked with a chain with Akronauplia, during  Enetian times, and was closing the entrance of the port at the unwanted ships.

Firstly it was called as Agioi Theodoroi island, from the homonym church. Later it was named by the Europeans as Passage and today is called Bourgi.

It was fortified at 1471 from the Enetian and formed a strategic spot. Later on the Turks added an extra tower in the quad of the Enetian, completing the fortification.
After the liberation, Bourgi was the residence of the headsmen of Palamidi death row, though was also running as a hotel for a small period of time.
From Nauplio port, you can visit Bourgi by boat with the many routes that are running for the best convenience of the visitors.
