Trikeri of Pelion. Historical data. Sites. Vigla

Historical Data
The history of the village dates back to the mid -1700s. Until then there were inhabitants on the island of Trikeri, who were brutally upset due to marauding pirates, and therefore they seek for a better place that would provide effective security.
The island of Trikeri is small in size and lacks mountains. So it wasn’t protecting residents against pirates.
In contrast, the current location of Trikeri town is located at an altitude of 340 meters above the sea level, and offers panoramic views to all cardinal points. So, the control of the maritime traffic was easy, while residents could directly identify enemy ships' movements.
The village was built with the houses to be very close one to another. This made any attempt for raid a very difficult task. The tall stone houses (many survive today), the narrow roads and the rugged terrain contributed Trikeri to remain unaffected by any further discomfort, even in difficult times. The inhabitants were engaged into sea (fishing, shell fishing, travels etc) and gradually Trikeri was developed economically and culturally.
The occupation with fishing, and the lack of an alternative economy, due to lack of water, led the locals in the development of the two main fishing ports, at the settlements of Agia Kyriaki at Pagasitikos’ shearwater and at Kottes within Pagassitikos Gulf. Initially, there was the need to return to the security of the country, but gradually were built houses and various other buildings in these places.
During the Greek Revolution in 1821, the ships of Trikerians significantly helped either secretly or openly and recognized by the military leadership for their largely assistance.
Trikeri remains autonomous and independent long after the cessation of the revolution in Thessaly, since the marine supply and the terrain does not allow Turks to approach the village.
At that time, Trikeri was one of the largest and strongest places in Magnesia. When the rebels were forced to leave, the village was condemned to poverty, since they took the wealth for the needs of their struggle.
With the annexation of Thessaly in Greece, Trikeri continued its tradition in seamanship, with Trikerian fishermen and sailors to be considered as the ablest of the area until today and the fleet of Trikerians to be a large chunk of the fleet of Magnesia.

Sites
Residentially, on top of Trikeri dominates the church of Holy Trinity and in the surrounding suburbs are the other houses. The streets and alleys are still stone made and picturesque, referring at the past.
In general, the eve in Trikeri gives a sense that time has stopped, while something urges you to want to stay there forever!

As a location, it has a unique beauty with rich combinations. The place is entirely traditional, with a panoramic view and the sea is very close, around it.

The traditional streets - paths between the country and the ports are preserved and kept in excellent condition, offering a chance for a walk. Especially in the path to Agia Kyriaki, you can meet even today other walkers.

Vigla
In the southern part of Trikeri town, in the neighborhood called Vigla, there is a view of rare beauty, which, due to its extreme position it has not yet been discovered by many people.
In the past, there was an observation place against the pirates. Today, romantic people and artists go there, seeking inspiration.
The view from there is spectacular, as one can see Skiathos, N. Evia and western Magnesia up to Volos. And throughout this scene is starring the sea, which is constantly moving and changing. On the right is Pagasitikos bay, on the left the Aegean Sea. Directly under is Agia Kyriaki with the traditional and fishing boats. Very often truck or passenger ships are passing by ahead of Agia Kyriaki, making the scene even more vibrant.
Prefer to visit Vigla at sunset...
